Can't update sims 3

I just recently starting playing sims 3 again. Thought I'd treat myself to the sims 3 pets expansion pack. Took hours to download and wouldn't let me install the game without updating my base game. Base game can't update, every time I press it to update it takes hours to download then comes up with a debug error, then it crashes and I loose everything. This is really frustrating, spent all day trying to get it to download. Currently on version 1.22.9.011001
